The French Football Federation (FFF) has announced plans for legal action against the Argentine national team over a racist chant involving their players after winning the Copa America. The controversy centres around Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez and a video he shared depicting the offensive chant.
The incident overshadowed Argentina’s victory over Colombia, clinched by Lautaro Martinez’s late goal. The chant, mocking the African descent of some French players, has led to global condemnation and calls for severe disciplinary measures.
Philippe Diallo, the FFF president, issued a strong rebuke: “The president of the French Football Federation condemns in the strongest terms the unacceptable racist and discriminatory remarks made against the players of the French team.” He stressed the urgent need for FIFA and the Argentine Football Association to address these sportsmanship and human rights violations.
The FFF has filed a legal complaint, signalling the gravity of the issue. This incident reflects ongoing racist attitudes within football, reminiscent of similar behaviour by Argentine fans during the 2022 World Cup.
Given Fernandez’s expected return for pre-season training, Chelsea is assessing the situation. The mood among Chelsea’s French players is reportedly tension and anger.
Calls for accountability extend to FIFA, the AFA, and CONMEBOL, though these organizations have yet to respond to the FFF’s legal actions.
