On August 24, 2025, Farhan Ghani, brother of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and Sindh Minister Saeed Ghani, was arrested along with associates for allegedly assaulting a government official in Karachi. The incident, which led to charges under anti-terrorism laws, has sparked significant attention due to Ghani’s political connections.
The assault occurred on August 22, 2025, on a service road near Shahrah-e-Faisal, where government employee Hafiz Sohail was supervising fibre optic cable installation. According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed at Ferozabad Police Station, 20-25 men, including Farhan Ghani, Qamaruddin, Shakeel Chandio, Sikandar, and Roohan, arrived in three vehicles and confronted Sohail. They demanded he stop the work, verbally abused him, and physically assaulted him despite his explanation of valid government permits.

Sohail’s complaint detailed armed individuals aiming weapons with the intent to kill, dragging him to a nearby petrol station room, and continuing the assault. Police rescued him after a call to the emergency helpline (15). The FIR includes charges of attempted murder, death threats, and terrorism-related offences, with ongoing investigations to identify additional suspects.
Farhan Ghani, chairman of Chanesar Town, and his associates face scrutiny amid Pakistan’s heightened focus on law enforcement, as seen in recent crackdowns on tax evasion and terrorism. Saeed Ghani, in a statement, defended his brother, asserting his innocence and pledging to contest the case in court. The arrests follow other high-profile cases, like the detention of Imran Khan’s nephews, reflecting political tensions
The incident has drawn mixed reactions on social media, with some criticising political influence in legal matters and others supporting Saeed Ghani’s call for due process. Police raids continue to apprehend remaining suspects, while the case underscores Karachi’s safety challenges, exacerbated by recent flooding and explosions.
