Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is scheduled for release on July 25, 2025. This reboot features the iconic superhero team as key figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Six. Directed by Matt Shakman, the film will skip the typical origin story, instead immersing viewers in a 1960s-inspired Earth-828, where the team faces cosmic threats, including Galactus. Pedro Pascal stars as Reed Richards, and the film boasts a stellar cast.

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will be released in theatres worldwide on July 25, 2025, with sneak previews beginning at 2 PM on Thursday. The film is set in a retro-futuristic alternate universe from the 1960s (Earth-828) and combines nostalgic aesthetics with modern storytelling, offering a fresh perspective that differs from previous adaptations by Fox. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed this unique setting at SDCC 2024, highlighting the innovative approach of the movie.

The Fantastic Four Cast and Characters

The star-studded cast includes:

  • Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, bringing intellectual depth.
  • Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, the emotional core.
  • Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, the wisecracking hero.
  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, using motion-capture for authenticity.
  • Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer, a cosmic herald.
  • Ralph Ineson as Galactus, the planet-devouring villain.
  • Paul Walter Hauser as Mole Man, with Natasha Lyonne and Sarah Niles in supporting roles.

John Malkovich’s role as Red Ghost was cut from the final edit.

The Fantastic Four’s Plot and Themes

The film follows the Fantastic Four as they defend Earth-828 from Galactus, who is targeting Franklin Richards, the son of Reed and Sue. The trailer suggests there will be flashbacks that explore their origins, with an emphasis on family dynamics and moral complexity. Critics have praised the “vibrant, retro-futuristic world” and the chemistry among the characters, according to Variety. Additionally, a post-credits scene hints at their return in “Avengers: Doomsday.”

The Fantastic Four: First Steps holds an 88% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, earning Certified Fresh status, surpassing Fox’s 2005 (27%), 2007 (37%), and 2015 (9%) films. Early reviews laud its “stunning visuals” and “moving performances,” though some note uneven CGI for The Thing. Audience scores reached 92% from over 1,000 votes, signalling strong fan approval.

Projections estimate a $190M-$210M global opening, with $100M-$110M domestically across 4,100 theaters, per Deadline. The film’s success, driven by premium formats like IMAX, marks a triumph for Marvel following the Fox merger.
