Eleven family members drowned after rainwater flooded the basement of their house in the Darra Adamkhel area of Kohat district, where they were sleeping.
Rescue 1122 reported that the tragic incident involved six children, three women, and two men from the same family. Following the incident, rescue officials transported the bodies to a nearby hospital for medico-legal formalities.
In a slight relief amid the tragedy, rescue teams managed to save a five-year-old girl from the flooded basement, according to a spokesman.
This incident occurred as heavy rains recently alleviated a prolonged drought in the Khyber District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Additionally, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) noted that rivers and streams in Punjab are currently flowing at normal levels due to the ongoing monsoon rains.
The PDMA spokesperson also mentioned that water levels in local dams and barrages remain stable, with Mangla Dam at 58% capacity and Tarbela Dam at 69%. Meanwhile, Indian dams on the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers hold water at up to 39% capacity.
The monsoon is expected to persist until July 31, with the PDMA predicting more rain across most Punjab districts in the next 24 hours.
