Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Faisal Vawda, now serving as an independent Senator, during his inaugural address, Senator Vawda sparked a debate on the role of historical accountability, specifically questioning the lack of consequences for those responsible for the execution of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
Vawda criticized the manipulation of laws, declaring, “It cannot be that we make laws and you interpret them as you wish; our laws are used against us.” He emphasized the Senate’s autonomy in upholding its members’ integrity, stating, “If our honour is compromised, we will retaliate strongly.”
Senator Vawda also touched on personal grievances and broader injustices within the political system. He shared his experiences of being ostracized for his outspokenness, which led to his departure from PTI and resignation from his previous Senate seat. Reflecting on personal attacks he endured, particularly those involving his family during his mother’s final days, he conveyed his deep emotional pain and the resolve to protect the dignity of his colleagues against similar affronts.
Further highlighting the judiciary’s role, Vawda criticized its inconsistencies during a discussion on the Samaa News program ‘Nadeem Malik Live.’ He cited significant judicial decisions that he perceives as unjust, such as the execution of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the lengthy imprisonment of Asif Ali Zardari without sufficient evidence, both of which were later viewed in a controversial light.
Vawda condemned the judicial system’s handling of political figures, including the support for Imran Khan following PTI’s departure from power, which he argued showcases the selective enforcement and interpretation of laws. Additionally, he denounced the forced vote of confidence on a Sunday as an example of politicized judicial actions.
In his forceful speech, Vawda vowed to pursue legal measures against what he sees as wrongful actions against him, affirming his commitment to justice and protecting his and his peers’ honour within the Senate.
