Mikel Oyarzabal scored in the final moments, securing Spain’s 2-1 victory over England and a record fourth Euro title, during Sunday’s final at Euro 2024.
Spain’s winning goal came from a rapid counter-attack initiated by Oyarzabal, who entered the match as a substitute for Alvaro Morata after 67 minutes. “I have done my job,” Oyarzabal reflected, emphasizing the significance of his contribution to the team.
Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, expressed immense pride in his team, describing them as the best globally following their European championship win.
The match began cautiously, with Spain controlling 65% of the possession in the first half. However, England’s Phil Foden managed the only shot on target. Spain quickly gained momentum after the break despite losing Rodri to injury. Teenager Lamine Yamal, finding space on the right, assisted Nico Williams in scoring the opening goal.
Spain intensified its attacks as the match progressed, challenging England’s defence. England’s coach, Gareth Southgate, responded by substituting Harry Kane with Ollie Watkins and later adding Cole Palmer. These changes soon yielded results when Jude Bellingham set up Palmer, who scored from 20 meters out in the 73rd minute, reviving England’s hopes.
However, Spain reclaimed control. A defensive lapse allowed Marc Cucurella to connect with Oyarzabal, who set up the decisive goal. Late in the game, Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simon and Dani Olmo made crucial defensive plays to maintain the lead.
This victory adds to Spain’s titles from 1964, 2008, and 2012, marking them as one of the few teams to win the Euro without a shootout in the tournament.
England’s defeat extends their championship drought, intensifying the long-standing “30 years of hurt” narrative. Despite the loss, Southgate praised his team’s resilience and performance throughout the tournament, acknowledging Spain as the deserving champions.
