The British-Pakistani Formula F3 champion, Enaam Ahmed, demonstrated remarkable resilience and skill this past weekend in the IndyNXT by Firestone race, achieving a top 10 position despite the challenging circumstances.
Ahmed, fondly known as the “Pakistani Panther,” raced against seasoned drivers on a notoriously difficult and wet track during the seventh round of the 2023 season from the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Famed for its extreme elevation changes likened to a roller coaster, the track was lined with numerous American fans eagerly cheering from their campsite tents and trailers. Ahmed’s starting position in the Grand Prix was 11th, but his determined spirit and quick reflexes ensured he quickly moved into the top 10 before the first lap was even completed.
Unpredictable Weather and Strong Competition
Just hours before the race commenced, the track had received heavy rain, and the surface was still notably damp when Ahmed commenced his speedy pursuit at 180 miles per hour. A light mist that fell during the race heightened the difficulty, making the track surface even slicker.
However, the 23-year-old Ahmed remained undeterred, strategically attacking for a position at every possible opportunity. A near-collision with Rasmus Lindh, where Ahmed wisely backed off to avoid getting stuck in the wet grass lining the track, demonstrated his mature decision-making under pressure. Ahmed soon regained ground and overtook Lindh a few laps later, showcasing his unmatched pace.
As conditions worsened towards the end of the race, multiple other experienced drivers slid off the track, to which Ahmed responded by seizing their forfeited positions. Having honed his skills as a British Formula F3 champion, Ahmed’s proficiency in navigating cool and rainy conditions was evident.
Despite his rookie status, Ahmed’s strong performance, securing a top-eight finish for the third time, is highly commendable. He remains optimistic for the remaining half of the 2023 season, saying, “It’s only a matter of time before we get it right, and once we’re at the front, I know we can win.”
