Eminem opened up about his battle with pill addiction in his new documentary Stans, detailing a near-fatal overdose in 2007 that became a turning point in his life.

The Mockingbird rapper described falling into a “vicious cycle” of depression and escalating drug use, saying, “I got into this cycle of, ‘I’m depressed so I need more pills,’ and then your tolerance gets so high you end up overdosing.” He recounted waking up in the hospital with tubes, unable to move, unaware of what had happened, as reported by Rolling Stone.

Eminem’s wake-up call came after missing his daughter Hailie Jade’s first guitar recital, captured in a video shown to him post-overdose. “The amount of guilt that I felt, I cried when I saw it because I was like, ‘Oh my God, I missed that,’” he shared. This guilt prompted a profound realisation, leading him to question, “Do you want to miss everything? If you can’t do it for yourself… then at least do it for them.” This moment in 2007 marked the start of his sobriety journey, which he began in April 2008 and has sustained since.

Eminem just made some real-life Stans’ dreams come true.
