On March 31, 2024, Eminem released “Houdini,” the lead single from his anticipated album “The Death of Slim Shady.”
Produced by Eminem, the track features a sample and interpolation of the 1982 Steve Miller Band hit “Abracadabra.” The song’s music video, directed by Rich Lee, depicts Eminem’s iconic character, Slim Shady, emerging from a portal into 2024, bewildered by the modern world.
Determined to reshape it, Slim Shady’s plans are thwarted by Eminem’s alter-ego “Rap Boy” and mentor Dr. Dre. The plot twists as their confrontation leads to creating a hybrid version of Eminem, leaving Dr. Dre dismayed and exiting the scene, only for a mysterious stranger to step in.
“Houdini” has achieved remarkable streaming success, debuting at No. 2 on the Global Spotify chart with 8.46 million streams, marking it as Eminem’s largest streaming debut. It surpassed the initial success of “Godzilla” from his 2020 album, which garnered 5,773,657 streams on its first day.
The song on iTunes reached No. 1 in 17 countries and became the most-watched music video on YouTube in the last 24 hours with 13.5 million views.
In addition to its commercial success, “Houdini” pays homage to classic Eminem videos, invoking nostalgia and earning a spike in streams for “Without Me,” a previous hit referenced in the new video.
