Elon Musk’s social media platform X experienced a significant outage, disrupting access for thousands of users across the United States.
According to Downdetector.com, over 6,700 user-submitted reports highlighted issues with the platform as of 6:07 p.m. ET, though partial recovery was noted later that evening.
Downdetector, which tracks outages by collating user reports, recorded a peak of more than 10,000 incidents earlier in the day, with disruptions dropping to around 1,041 by 7:42 p.m. ET. The platform’s app and website were primarily affected, impacting users’ ability to load content, send messages, or access notifications. While Downdetector’s figures are based on voluntary reports, the number of affected users may be higher.

The outage follows a pattern of intermittent disruptions for X, with similar incidents reported in March and May 2025. Users expressed frustration on alternative platforms, with X posts like “X is down again!” reflecting widespread annoyance. Some speculated about potential causes, but no official statement from X confirmed the reason for the June 14 outage. Previous disruptions were attributed to cyberattacks, though cybersecurity experts have questioned such claims.
Elon Musk has been focusing on his business empire after significant political involvement and has not publicly addressed this specific outage as of 9:22 p.m. PDT. In May, he announced a return to “24/7” work at X, Tesla, and xAI, citing the need for operational improvements following earlier outages. X’s technical issues and controversies over content moderation continue to challenge its reliability.
