The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has declared an increase in electricity tariffs by Rs3.33 per unit, which will add an additional financial burden of over Rs35 billion on consumers.
This rate adjustment is part of the monthly fuel adjustment for April, as stated in a NEPRA notification.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) originally proposed an increase of Rs3.49 per unit. However, NEPRA approved a slightly lesser increase. The official notification was released on Thursday, and the updated rates will be applied to this month’s electricity bills.
This hike in electricity prices is likely to significantly affect consumers, who are already facing rising living costs.
Furthermore, on June 4, NEPRA announced another price rise as part of the quarterly adjustment for the current financial year. This increase will affect consumers for the next three months.
Electricity prices will increase by Rs1.90 per unit in June and by 93 paisas per unit in July and August. This means higher electricity bills for the period from June to August 2024.
Overall, this price adjustment will impose more than Rs46 billion on power consumers, including those served by K-Electric. A specific increase of Rs3.28 has also been approved for electric vehicle charging stations.
