The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has committed to conducting transparent elections as promptly as feasible, ensuring all political parties have an even ground for participation. This pledge was made during its initial consultation with political entities headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.
In the session, both the PTI and JUI-F were individually consulted. The PTI contingent emphasized a 90-day timeline for elections as mandated by the Constitution and voiced against immediate delimitation while also urging for the release of their leaders and permission for rallies.
On the other hand, the JUI-F representatives stressed the necessity of delimitation following the recent census results and the need for updated electoral rolls.
Differing Views on Election Preparation
Post-meeting, PTI’s Barrister Ali Zafar voiced the party’s full support for free elections within 90 days, pointing out that delimitation hinges on constitutional amendments. He also highlighted the detention of the PTI chairman, questioning the feasibility of equal opportunities in such circumstances.
Meanwhile, Maulana Haideri of JUI-F, reflecting on the aftermath of the 2018 general elections, urged the ECP to avoid past mistakes and ensure the nation’s faith in the upcoming elections. He lamented the adverse outcomes of the 2018 elections, referencing economic challenges and rising unemployment.
