The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) proposed that the Punjab elections can be held between April 30 and May 7.
The decision was made during today’s meeting of the electoral body, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja.
According to a news release from the ECP, “The Election Commission has sent a letter to the president in light of the decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, in which the dates for holding the elections in Punjab have been suggested between April 30 and May 7, 2023.”
It was reported that the panel was prepared to fulfill its legal and constitutional responsibilities when the president selected the election date.
In addition, the statement stated that the ECP had sent a letter to the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, informing him that the commission was awaiting his response about the polling date in the province.
The statement was made two days after the Supreme Court declared that elections for the Punjab and KP assemblies must be held within the allotted 90-day period. Yet, it permitted the ECP to suggest a poll date that deviates from the 90-day timetable by the “bare minimum” in case of practical difficulties.
