The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday suspended the memberships of 159 lawmakers from the National Assembly, Senate and provincial legislatures. This action was taken because they failed to submit their mandatory financial statements.
According to an official notification, the suspension includes 32 members of the National Assembly, 50 members of the Punjab Assembly, and 33 lawmakers from the Sindh Assembly. In addition, 28 members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, seven members of the Balochistan Assembly, and nine senators were suspended.
Among those affected are Syed Awais Qadir Shah, Federal Education Minister, and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan chairman Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui. Additionally, leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Syed Ali Musa Gilani and Syed Abdul Qadir Gilani, were suspended. The list also includes Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz MNA Saira Tarar.

The ECP also suspended the memberships of nine senators, including Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr Musadik Malik, Abid Sher Ali, and Murad Saeed.
The action followed an ECP warning issued the previous day. This warning directed lawmakers who had failed to file their statements to comply by January 15 or face suspension.
In the Punjab Assembly, 50 members were suspended, including Rana Sikandar Hayat, Adnan Dogar, and Aamir Hayat Hiraj.
Similarly, 33 members of the Sindh Assembly lost their memberships. Among them were former chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and provincial minister Saeed Ghani.
The ECP also suspended 28 lawmakers from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and seven from the Balochistan Assembly for the same violation.
Under election laws, all members of the National Assembly, Senate and provincial assemblies must submit complete details of their assets and liabilities to the ECP by December 31 each year. In addition, they must file financial statements for their spouse and dependent children on Form B. This must be done by June 30 each year.
Failure to comply results in suspension until the required statements are submitted. During the suspension period, lawmakers are barred from attending sessions or participating in legislative business. For example, they are not allowed to vote on motions of confidence.
