The five-week death toll from drought in Tharparkar reached 37 after a two-year-old died of malnutrition at the Civil Hospital in Mithi earlier today.
The unrelenting drought spell, compounded by poor nutrition and lack of health facilities and awareness, continues to take its toll on the children of the district.
Around 80 children, admitted to Civil Hospital, are said to be in critical condition.
More than 200 children have died since May, this year alone with most deaths being attributed to the prevalent mal-nourishment in the desert region – which is experiencing its third year of drought.
