After winning the Roland-Garros this year on June 11, Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic chose to skip warm-up tournaments on grass, confident that he doesn’t need them to compete at Wimbledon.
Djokovic, 36, had avoided participating in preparatory tournaments for the third major since 2018 when Marin Cilic defeated him in the Queen’s final. Instead of playing warm-up games, his only scheduled pre-Wimbledon match is an exhibition game against Frances Tiafoe in Hurlingham on Thursday.
Djokovic’s Eighth Wimbledon Victory
Djokovic has already secured seven victories at the prestigious Wimbledon tournament, including four consecutive wins; now he is looking to claim an eighth title. If Djokovic wins Wimbledon 2023 would tie him with Roger Federer’s record and edge him closer to completing the ‘Grand Slam’ within a year.
Djokovic is famously known for celebrating his Wimbledon victories by eating a piece of grass from the All England Club courts, a tradition he playfully reminded his fans of in a recent social media post.
The outcome of the Queen’s final between Carlos Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur holds significant consequences for Djokovic. Depending on the result, Djokovic could either maintain his top ranking and secure the first seed in the Wimbledon draw, scheduled for Friday, June 30, or face a potential shift in his current standing.
The 23-time major champion knows that his first match at the British tournament is set for Monday, July 3, signaling the start of the iconic event in London.
