On August 21, 2025, Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry firmly denied media reports alleging that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir made political comments in Brussels.
Speaking at a media event, Chaudhry clarified that the COAS neither gave an interview nor mentioned political reconciliation or apologies, specifically refuting claims about remarks on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Chaudhry addressed reports claiming Munir suggested political reconciliation required “genuine apologies” from all parties. He stated, “The army chief made no political comments in Brussels and made no remark about the PTI.” The clarification counters last week’s media narrative, which suggested Munir linked reconciliation to apologies, amid ongoing tensions following the May 9, 2023, riots.
Reiterating the military’s position, Chaudhry emphasised accountability for the May 9 riots, triggered by PTI founder Imran Khan’s arrest, which led to vandalism of military and state installations. “Those behind the incident, their facilitators, and planners should be held accountable as per the law,” he said, adding, “May 9 is not just a matter of the army but that of the nation.”
Chaudhry highlighted Pakistan’s potential to shape the region, noting frequent attacks due to its strategic importance. Reflecting on the May 2025 conflict with India, he said Pakistan’s robust response thwarted India’s plans, including proxy tactics, proving its strength globally. He stressed the need for full implementation of the 2014 National Action Plan’s 14 points to address terrorism and governance gaps, lamenting that “the army, police, and law enforcement agencies are filling these gaps with their blood daily.”
On the expulsion of illegal Afghan residents, Chaudhry noted resistance from some political and criminal figures in Pakistan. He urged the youth to understand the nation’s ideological legacy to counter such challenges, reinforcing the military’s commitment to national security.
