Following recent incidents of Holy Quran desecration that have escalated security concerns, Denmark has announced tightened border controls. This decision aligns with Sweden’s move to increase border checks earlier in the week.
In recent months, several copies of the holy book have been desecrated by anti-Islam activists in Denmark and Sweden, leading to international uproar and calls from the Muslim community for governments to prohibit such acts.
In a statement, the Danish ministry said, “Today, authorities have deemed it necessary to intensify scrutiny of individuals entering Denmark, to counter specific and immediate threats.”
The ministry further added that these enhanced border controls are scheduled to remain until August 10.
“The recent incidents of Quran burnings have influenced the present security situation, as indicated by the security police,” Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard expressed.
Denmark’s decision to boost border control, with an increased focus on checking travellers arriving in the country, mirrors Sweden’s recent actions.
Both governments have condemned the desecrations and are contemplating new legislation to prevent such incidents.
