The Delhi Police employed artificial intelligence (AI) to reconstruct the face of a man digitally found deceased near a flyover. Distributing posters featuring the reconstructed image aided in identifying the victim and the subsequent arrest of the suspects involved.
The Delhi police confirmed and reported by the Times of India that the approach helped identify the victim and led to the capture of the perpetrators. The body was discovered near the Geeta Colony flyover on January 10, initiating a swift investigation.
A senior police officer remarked that it was initially a ‘blind murder case,’ with no identification documents found on the victim. An autopsy conducted after 72 hours indicated he had been strangled.
To solve the case, a team of 30 police officers faced the critical task of identifying the victim. They employed AI to alter the victim’s facial image digitally, upload it to the CCTN (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network) website, distribute over 400 posters in Delhi, and share them digitally.
The case’s turning point came when a man recognized the victim as his brother Hitendra from a poster outside a police station. Further inquiry revealed Hitendra was involved in a two-month-old dispute with two individuals over a woman. On January 9, these individuals, intoxicated at the time, strangled Hitendra to death.
The police have arrested four individuals in this case, including a woman and a cab driver.
