India’s financial crime agency detained Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday, as announced by his party.
Kejriwal’s arrest is linked to accusations of corruption regarding the city’s alcohol policy, marking a significant challenge for the opposition with elections looming.
The arrest of Arvind Kejriwal resulted in several leading members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), founded more than ten years ago, being incarcerated. This includes the prior detention of two of Kejriwal’s colleagues in the same case, a situation the party condemns as “dirty politics.”
The probe centres on a 2022 policy introduced by the Delhi government, aimed at lessening state oversight on alcohol sales, purportedly benefiting private retailers. The policy was subsequently rescinded.
AAP lawmaker Atishi revealed the party’s intention to challenge Kejriwal’s arrest. “India’s financial crime agency has arrested Arvind Kejriwal,” Delhi Education Minister Atishi Marlena Singh said, addressing the media about the situation involving India’s principal agency for financial crime investigations.
