Twin bombings in Balochistan’s Pishin and Qilla Saifullah districts on Wednesday resulted in the tragic loss of at least 24 lives, with numerous others injured. These attacks, occurring just a day before the scheduled elections, have intensified concerns regarding regional security.

The first explosion targeted the campaign office of Asfandyar Khan Kakar, an independent candidate in the PB-47 constituency of Pishin district. In contrast, the second blast occurred outside the office of JUI-F in Qilla Saifullah, marking a sombre prelude to the election.

The Pishin explosion alone claimed 14 lives, with an additional 10 fatalities reported from the Qilla Saifullah bombing. The proximity of Khanzai Hospital to the Pishin explosion site allowed for immediate medical response, though the casualty toll underscores the severity of the attacks. Jumma Dad Khan, the Deputy Commissioner of Pishin, highlighted the extensive injuries resulting from the blast, which took place during the electoral campaign’s mandated quiet period.

Government Response and Election Security

In response to these heinous attacks, Balochistan’s caretaker Minister for Home and Tribal Affairs, Mir Zubair Khan Jamali, has expressed his condolences and called for an immediate investigation. Denouncing the bombings as efforts by “the country’s enemies” to disrupt stability, Jamali affirmed the continuation of the electoral process, underscoring the government’s resolve against intimidation tactics.
