Acclaimed Hollywood actor Cuba Gooding Jr., best known for his award-winning performance alongside Tom Cruise in “Jerry Maguire,” recently settled a distressing rape lawsuit.
The actor, who has remained in the limelight since his Oscar-winning role, was accused of raping a woman at the Mercer Hotel in Soho on August 24, 2013. The woman claimed she was assaulted twice in the same hotel room, and a trial was about to commence.
The court proceedings were scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in a Manhattan federal court on Tuesday. However, a court note stated that both parties had resolved. The settlement details have not been disclosed, but the complainant reportedly sought $6 million in damages.
Gooding Jr., while not denying that a sexual encounter occurred, maintained that the interaction was consensual. Nine witnesses were set to testify throughout the trial, expected to last between three to four days.
The lawsuit is not Gooding Jr.’s first encounter with allegations of this nature. A total of 30 women have accused the actor of various forms of sexual misconduct. Two additional women leveled accusations against him between 2018 and 2019.
In 2022, he pled guilty to a misdemeanor after attempting to forcibly kiss a worker at a New York nightclub in 2018. Despite his history of alleged misconduct, the actor has thus far avoided serving time
