A large crack has appeared in the Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIA) building in Islamabad, after Monday’s earthquake. Special teams yesterday, initiated a survey of the recently renovated airport to see if there are other damages.
A crack, measuring five to six feet, appeared in the ceiling of the ‘Concourse Hall’ – opposite the domestic arrival’s lounge – in the airport building, but was not noted by the airport authorities at the time.
After the crack appeared the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) initiated a survey of the airport building and also visited the runway to seek out any damage caused by the earthquake. When contacted, the CAA spokesperson confirmed that the airport survey began yesterday.
“The survey was started to make the airport building safe and secure in light of reports that aftershocks were to be expected,” She said.
Repair work on the crack began shortly after it was noticed.
