The Congress party has managed to pull ahead, surpassing the crucial halfway point, suggesting a strong likelihood of the party securing a victory in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly Election.
The Congress+ alliance led in as many as 136 seats, while their main opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was leading in 64. To form a government in the state, a party or coalition needs a minimum of 113 seats.
The impressive performance of its state president, D K Shivakumar, provided a significant boost to the Congress party’s prospects. He emerged victorious in the Kanakapura constituency, winning over 70% of the votes.
Shivakumar is running for the top job of Chief Minister alongside Congress legislature party leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The race for the coveted chief ministerial position is expected to be close between these two stalwarts. However, inside sources hint that Siddaramaiah might have a slight edge in this numbers game.
Conversely, the BJP has embarked on a period of introspection to comprehend the reasons behind its less-than-satisfactory performance.
Current Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, in a conversation with reporters, acknowledged their shortcomings, saying, “Despite the best efforts by PM Modi and our party workers, we were not able to leave a significant mark.” This statement underlines the BJP ranks’ disappointment as they grapple with the electoral outcome.
