Chief Justice of Pakistan, Umar Ata Bandial, clarified that his comment, “Good to see you Imran Khan,” bore no political connotations.
The ongoing political tension in the country has placed the corridors of power under significant strain. In a civil case hearing on Tuesday, Chief Justice Bandial insisted that his greeting to the ousted Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairperson, Imran Khan, was a simple act of courtesy and not a political gesture. This comment followed Khan’s recent arrest by paramilitary forces and subsequent criticism directed at Bandial.
In the same hearing, the Chief Justice underscored the necessity of maintaining basic respect and decorum. His comments followed a demonstration by the ruling coalition, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), who were protesting outside the Supreme Court against the alleged preferential treatment of Imran Khan.
The political drama began on May 9, 2023, when paramilitary Rangers stormed the Islamabad High Court, where Khan was present for the Al-Qadir Trust case. The former Prime Minister was rapidly detained on behalf of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), an act PTI has labeled as an “abduction.”

While the Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq questioned the method of arrest, he upheld its legality, leading to an eight-day physical remand granted to the NAB.
The arrest instigated a wave of protests across the country, leading to internet blackouts and information restrictions by the government. The international community also expressed concern over the intervention of paramilitary forces in civilian matters.
In the aftermath of Khan’s arrest and release, the political landscape remains volatile, with the federal government criticizing the judiciary and Khan accusing the security forces of bias against his party. The government’s subsequent crackdown on civil dissent has resulted in hundreds of detentions nationwide.
