A recent intelligence report cited by Daily Mail revealed that 55 Chinese sailors tragically lost their lives due to an accident aboard a nuclear submarine. The incident reportedly occurred in the Yellow Sea on August 21. The mishap led to the contamination of the vessel’s oxygen system while underwater, resulting in the death of everyone aboard.
China’s Denial and the Course of Events
While China has officially denied such an occurrence, the UK intelligence report presents a different narrative. It claims the submarine encountered a trap designed primarily to ensnare US and allied submarines. This obstacle, consisting of chains and anchors, led to system failures. Even though repairs were undertaken, it took six hours to resurface the vessel. During this period, a catastrophic failure in the oxygen system reportedly poisoned the crew.
Insights from a British Submariner
A British naval expert weighed in on the situation, stating, “If they were trapped on the net system and the submarine’s batteries were running flat, then the air purifiers and treatment systems could have failed.” This would lead to reliance on secondary systems, which might not have been adequate to maintain breathable air. The expert further hinted that while British submarines are equipped with technology that absorbs CO2 and generates oxygen in such dire situations, not all nations may possess this advanced tech.
About the Submarine
The type of Chinese submarine involved in this unfortunate incident measures about 351ft in length and comes equipped with torpedoes.
