Chelsea Football Club confirmed on Monday that Enzo Maresca has been appointed their new manager on a five-year contract. Maresca, formerly in charge at Leicester, succeeds Mauricio Pochettino, who departed the club after just one season.
Maresca guided Leicester to a Championship title in his debut season, earning him the role at Chelsea. Before selecting Maresca, the club considered several candidates, including Roberto De Zerbi, Kieran McKenna, and Thomas Frank.
Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, expressed their satisfaction with Maresca’s appointment, praising his effective coaching and vision that align with the club’s ambitions. Maresca will start his role on July 1. He expressed enthusiasm about joining Chelsea, a club he described as one of the world’s most prestigious, and is eager to develop a team that embodies the club’s tradition of success.
Under the ownership of Clearlake Capital, which succeeded Roman Abramovich in May 2022, Chelsea has invested heavily in talent but has struggled to secure trophies in the past two seasons. Maresca is the sixth coach to lead Chelsea since the consortium’s takeover. Meanwhile, Leicester acknowledged Maresca’s departure with gratitude for his success in securing their Premier League return.
