International media reported that a brawl in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, involving Indian military personnel and police officers.
Following the assault, an FIR has been filed against 16 military personnel, including three army officers, who are accused of forcibly entering a police station and assaulting police officers on the night of May 28.
The officers involved allegedly abducted a head constable and confiscated several mobile phones. Deputy Superintendent Pirzada Mujahid ul Haq is leading the investigation into this incident, which has not yet led to any arrests. Senior officials from the Indian army and police are reportedly in ongoing discussions to address the situation.
The conflict reportedly began after police from the Kupwara station raided the home of a member of the 160 Territorial Army, taking him into custody, which his colleagues perceived negatively. This prompted the accused military personnel to retaliate by storming the police station.
The FIR details that the group, led by Lieutenant Colonels Ankit Sood, Nikhil, and Raju Chauhan, entered the police station, using batons and firearms to assault the officers present. The altercation resulted in injuries to five police officers, four of whom constables Zahoor Ahmed, Salim Mushtaq, Special Police Officers Raees Khan, and Imtiaz Ahmed Malik, required hospitalization at Srinagar’s Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences.
The incident escalated when the military personnel allegedly abducted head constable Ghulam Rasool, who was later released early the next morning. Lieutenant Colonel M.K. Sahu, an army spokesperson, has denied allegations of the assault, describing the event as a minor disagreement over operational issues that have been resolved amicably.
Despite these claims, a high-ranking Indian Army officer in Srinagar acknowledged the incident and stated that efforts are being made to resolve the matter legally and amicably. Amidst these efforts, CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced and circulated on social media, drawing widespread attention.
