Carlos Alcaraz clinched his Wimbledon title on Sunday, overpowering Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
In a display of power and precision, the Spanish third seed won 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/4). This victory marks his fourth Grand Slam title and ties the Open Era record for most Grand Slams won by the age of 21, joining the ranks of Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg, and Mats Wilander.
Alcaraz also became the sixth man to win the French Open and Wimbledon consecutively.
Djokovic, 37, who recently had knee surgery, aimed to secure a record 25th Grand Slam. However, he struggled under the Centre Court sunshine, unable to counter Alcaraz’s powerful baseline game and deft drop shots.
The match began with Alcaraz breaking Djokovic after a high-quality 14-minute game. Following Djokovic’s double fault in the fifth game, he quickly found his rhythm and achieved a double break.
Despite the Serbian’s efforts, including holding serve to love and reducing the deficit to 5-2, he ultimately surrendered the first set after a net error.
Alcaraz aggressively started the second set, breaking early and maintaining his lead despite pressure. Another Djokovic error and a subsequent double fault saw Alcaraz extend his lead to 5-2, nearing a two-set advantage.
The match seemed one-sided as Djokovic saved break points early in the third set but faltered again, allowing Alcaraz to break and lead 5-4. Although Alcaraz missed three match points, allowing Djokovic to break back, he regained composure to secure the championship in a tie-break.
With this loss, Djokovic has not defeated a top-ten player this year nor won any titles. He now looks forward to competing in the Paris Olympics, aiming for his first gold medal.
