The caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, dispelled the speculations about the president’s authority to announce the upcoming election date.
In a recent television interview, he clarified that the responsibility rests with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), as mandated by a law passed by the parliament. Despite rumours of President Arif Alvi preparing to declare an election date, sources from the Presidential Palace assert that these claims are incorrect and discussions regarding the election schedule are ongoing.
Kakar emphasized that the elections would proceed according to existing laws without any intention to extend the caretaker government’s tenure. He also mentioned that there were no constraints on the PTI’s participation in the elections and assured that Nawaz Sharif would be treated lawfully upon his return to Pakistan.
Remarks on Various Issues: From Sports to Security Concerns
Addressing several other topics during the interview, Kakar spoke firmly against the politicization of sports, specifically mentioning that cricket board officials should solely handle cricket issues with India.
On the diplomatic front, he highlighted that a visit from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman is on the cards to finalize investment projects at a mutually agreeable time. Kakar reiterated Pakistan’s deep connection with Kashmir and vowed to continue actions against smuggling to uphold the state’s writ.
He highlighted the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council’s Apex Committee in implementing decisive actions and fostering strong ties with Afghanistan, focusing on trade, security, and regional connectivity. Commenting on the increase in terrorism incidents, Kakar acknowledged the enhanced capabilities of terrorists but affirmed the state’s unwavering stance against terrorism, assuring that the security forces are fully equipped to protect the nation’s territory.
