Canada’s Liberal Party crowns its new leader on March 9, 2025, with ex-central banker Mark Carney tipped to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau amid U.S.

President Donald Trump’s trade salvos. The Canada Liberal Leader vote, wrapping Sunday in Ottawa, pits Carney, a former Bank of Canada and England governor, against Chrystia Freeland, Trudeau’s ex-deputy. The winner steps into the PM role, bracing for an election by October that Conservatives might snag, polls suggest.

Carney vs. Freeland

Carney’s the favorite, backed by most of Trudeau’s cabinet and over half of Liberal MPs, touting his crisis-handling cred from 2008 and Brexit. “Trump’s hitting our economy—I’m ready,” he rallied Friday near Toronto. Freeland, a cabinet vet since 2015, vows the same fight but trails in support.

Congratulations to Mark Carney. He was chosen as the Liberal leader today in a landslide, making him Canada’s new Prime Minister.
Fun Fact: during his speech today, he never once referred to Trump as “President.” Fucking eh! pic.twitter.com/qZ5efgNUTd

The party faithful gathered in a red-draped Ottawa hall and await the call. “We’ll get a strong leader,” Luciana Bordignon, 59, told AFP, eyeing Carney. The Canada Liberal Leader race hinges on thwarting Trump’s tariff and annexation jabs.

Trump’s wild trade swings and 51st-state quips have Canada on edge, yet Lozminda Longkines, 71, sees unity: “He’s our common foe.” Carney calls it “the biggest crisis of our lives,” pitching his global finance chops. Freeland’s insider edge might surprise, but an election looms fast weeks, maybe. Who’ll helm the Liberals against Trump and the Tories? The Canadian Liberal Leader reveal electrifies the nation.

The Canadian Liberal leadership vote is between Carney and Freeland, while Trump’s chaos looms large this Sunday. Canada is engaged with a new prime minister, and the election has high stakes.
