Asif and Yousuf Khaliq have expanded their Pakistani tea brand by opening the second “Café Chaiwala Arshad Khan” branch in Tooting, South London.
The South Lonod outlet celebrates Pakistani culture with vibrant truck art and a mini library of Urdu books, building on the success of their initial branch, which was established in East London two years ago. With the brand gaining momentum, plans are already underway to open a third branch in West London after Ramadan.
Originating from Karachi, the Khaliq brothers also operate several medium-sized businesses in South London, including food shops and snooker clubs. “We’ve invested over £250,000 in our Pakistani chai brand, aiming not just for profit but to promote Pakistani culture and identity. Café Chaiwala Arshad Khan embodies this ethos,” they stated.
The decision to open in Tooting was strategic. It targeted the area’s large, flourishing Asian community, which sought authentic chai and street food.
Arshad Khan’s global fame has led to opening many similar cafes throughout the UK. However, the brothers point out numerous establishments have imitated the concept without adequately acknowledging Khan.
Arshad Khan, known globally since his image went viral, started as a tea seller at a roadside stall in Islamabad. His life transformed dramatically when Javeria Ali posted his photo on Instagram in 2016 with the caption: “Hot Tea”. His distinctive appearance quickly captured public attention, catapulting him to fame.
Despite his challenging beginnings in a conservative Pashtun family from Mardan, Khan’s sudden fame led to significant opportunities. It made him a social media icon, fashion figure, and the face of a burgeoning franchise. His nickname, “Chaiwala,” inspired the brand name.
Today, Café Chaiwala serves a diverse selection of beloved Pakistani and Indian street foods, including parathas, Tikka, Aaloo Kebabs, Biscuits, and Lassi. Considering his journey, Khan recognizes the significant transformation from a struggling teenager to a respected entrepreneur in London, showcasing an inspiring story of success and cultural influence.
