Australian police have confirmed the discovery of an improvised explosive device (IED) inside a vehicle. This vehicle was linked to the suspect killed during Sunday’s deadly shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon announced during a media briefing. He said investigators located the device in a car connected to the deceased attacker.
“We have found an improvised explosive device in a car which is linked to the dead offender,” Commissioner Lanyon said.
NSW Police confirmed that a bomb disposal unit was immediately deployed. This occurred after officers found the suspicious vehicle near the scene of the shooting. Authorities secured the area as specialists examined the car.
Police later said investigators believed the vehicle contained multiple suspected explosive devices. This significantly raised concerns about the scale and intent of the attack.

Commissioner Lanyon said the discovery suggests the incident may have involved more extensive planning than initially believed. However, police stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and has not yet formally classified the attack.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the explosives were functional or intended for use. However, officials acknowledged the find altered the threat assessment.
Alex Ryvchin, Co-Chief Executive Officer of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, earlier described the shooting as devastating. Speaking to Sky News, he said the scale of the violence was difficult to comprehend. He also confirmed that his media adviser was wounded in the attack.

“If we were targeted deliberately in this way, it’s something none of us could have ever imagined,” Ryvchin said.
Police urged the public to avoid speculation while forensic and counter-terrorism teams continue their work. Investigators are analysing evidence to determine motive, affiliations, and whether any additional suspects were involved. Officials said they would release further information as soon as it becomes available and reaffirmed their commitment to public safety.
