White House contenders Donald Trump and Kamala Harris launched a hectic final week of campaigning on Wednesday. Harris had to quickly distance herself from President Joe Biden’s comments that seemed to label Trump supporters as “garbage.”
Harris’s campaign trail led her through North Carolina and onto Pennsylvania, targeting two critical battleground states that might decide this tightly contested election.
Meanwhile, Trump campaigned in Rocky Mount, North Carolina—just an hour from Harris’s Raleigh rally—before heading to Wisconsin to join US sports star Brett Favre. Trump has indicated he may not accept the election results if he loses, citing isolated voting irregularities to support claims of widespread fraud.
On Wednesday, instead of revelling in the success of a large rally outside the White House, Harris addressed questions about Biden’s controversial remarks. Biden had responded to a speaker at a Trump rally who derogatorily referred to Puerto Rico, leading Biden to comment, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.” The White House later clarified that Biden criticised Trump’s rhetoric, not his supporters.
Harris clarified her position: “Let me be clear: I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for.”
In Washington, Harris delivered a compelling speech at the location where Trump allegedly incited a mob on January 6, 2021. She described Trump as “unstable” and “consumed with grievance,” aiming for unchecked power.
However, Harris also painted an optimistic picture of America’s future, encouraging her audience to look forward to writing the next chapter in America’s story with the White House illuminated behind her.
Trump, on the other hand, continued to push his narrative of electoral fraud on social media. He specifically targeted Pennsylvania, reiterating his accusations of significant cheating similar to those he made the previous evening.
