US President Joe Biden has covertly approved new military aid for Israel, including bombs and fighter jets.
As reported by The Washington Post. Amid ongoing conflict in Gaza, resulting in widespread destruction and casualties, Tel Aviv plans to extend its military actions to Rafah, where a considerable number of displaced Palestinians reside, despite potential humanitarian consequences.
Officials from the Pentagon and the State Department have disclosed that the arms package encompasses over 1800 bombs. Notably, these 2000-pound bombs, capable of levelling city blocks, have seen extensive use in Gaza despite their rarity in populated zones.
There’s growing concern among some Democrats, who are urging the US to condition its military support on Israel’s commitment to minimizing civilian harm in Rafah and facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza, which faces a looming famine.
Senator Chris Van Hollen emphasized the Biden administration’s need to secure these commitments before sanctioning further military aid for Gaza, advocating for actions that align with US statements.
Moreover, the State Department recently approved the supply of 25 F-35 fighter jets and engines to Israel. This follows reports of over 100 US weapon sales to Israel since the Gaza conflict’s escalation on October 7, contradicting US appeals for a ceasefire.
The ongoing siege by Israel has severely restricted access to essential supplies for Gaza’s residents, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Since the conflict’s outbreak, over 32,500 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 75,000 injured.
