Beyoncé has granted Kamala Harris, the U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate for the upcoming November election, permission to use her song “Freedom” during campaign events.
The track, known for its powerful message of liberation, is from Beyoncé’s acclaimed 2016 album “Lemonade.”
A source close to the Harris campaign informed CNN that they received approval from Beyoncé’s team to feature the song throughout the presidential campaign. Harris has already utilized “Freedom” during her first official visit to her campaign headquarters, signalling its significance to her campaign’s theme and messaging.
Beyoncé, who typically enforces stringent clearance rules for her music, reportedly responded promptly to the permission request this Monday, underscoring her efficient approval process.
While Beyoncé has not publicly endorsed Harris since President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election, her authorization for Harris to use “Freedom” suggests a level of support for the Vice President’s campaign. Historically, Beyoncé has actively supported Democratic candidates.
Beyoncé performed the U.S. national anthem at President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2013, participated in a pre-election concert for Hillary Clinton in 2016 alongside her husband, Jay-Z, in Cleveland, Ohio, and endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket in 2020 with a call to vote posted on her Instagram.
