Azerbaijan has enhanced its air force by adding JF-17 Block III fighter jets from Pakistan, acquired in a deal valued at approximately $1.6 billion.
The Azerbaijan presidency announced the integration of these jets into their air force following a formal presentation to President Ilham Aliyev at Heydar Aliyev International Airport. This ceremony coincided with the Azerbaijan International Defence Exhibition 2024 in Baku and featured Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov.
At the event, Air Vice Marshal Hakim Raza, Chairman of the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Board, briefed President Aliyev on the jet’s advanced tactical features and operational capabilities.
The Inter-Services Public Relations confirmed the recent signing of the sale contract. With this acquisition, Azerbaijan joins Myanmar and Nigeria as owners of the JF-17 from Pakistan. Speculation also suggests Iraq might consider purchasing these jets.
Officials are believed to have finalized the agreement in February. During a July visit to Islamabad, officials informed President Aliyev about the jet’s combat functions and versatility. He commended the deal for strengthening military ties between Pakistan and Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijani media reports indicate that the deal includes jets, armament, and training, totalling $1.6 billion.
The JF-17 Block III, a joint project of Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, boasts advanced avionics like Active Electronically Scanned Array radar and long-range missile capabilities. This versatile, single-engine fighter excels in air-to-air and air-to-ground missions and offers exceptional manoeuvrability at various altitudes.
