Ayesha Curry and Sydel Curry-Lee are transforming the representation of black individuals in the wine industry with their Domaine Curry Wines.
Domaine Curry Winesn was founded in 2018; its brand underscores family values and addresses the underrepresentation of black professionals in this sector.
In a discussion on Bon Appétit’s “Food People,” Ayesha highlighted the economic influence of black women in the wine market, noting their $1.6 trillion purchasing power. Despite making up 12% of wine consumers, black women are starkly underrepresented in the industry.
Domaine Curry Wines specializes in high-end wines, starting at $75, demonstrating the founders’ commitment to quality and inclusivity. In 2023, Constellation Brands acquired the company, aligning with their initiative to invest $100 million in black- and minority-owned businesses by 2030, further promoting Domaine Curry’s inclusive mission.
As Sydel pointed out in a 2023 ESSENCE interview, challenges persist, noting the industry’s dominance by white males and the low percentage of women-owned wineries in California, especially among black women. Nevertheless, the sisters-in-law leverage their knowledge and passion for winemaking, crafting distinctive blends inspired by Bordeaux-style wines.
Their journey began in 2015 with a family dinner conversation, which led to the creation of a brand that produces exceptional wines and champions greater diversity within the wine industry. Through Domaine Curry, Ayesha and Sydel are not just selling wine; they are paving the way for future black entrepreneurs and altering industry standards.
