Austria edged closer to the Euro 2024 knockout rounds with a decisive 3-1 victory over Poland on Friday.
Marko Arnautovic starred in the win, scoring crucial goals, including a late penalty. Poland’s chances are hanging by a thread as they need a win against France to keep their hopes alive.
Gernot Trauner gave Austria an early lead with a powerful header. Poland’s Krzysztof Piatek equalized in the 30th minute, but Robert Lewandowski’s subdued performance undermined their efforts. Introduced with 30 minutes left, Lewandowski couldn’t influence the game.
Austria reclaimed the lead through Christoph Baumgartner after a well-executed team play. Arnautovic’s 78th-minute penalty sealed the win. They will advance if Austria can secure a draw against the Netherlands in their final Group D match.
Lewandowski, recently injured, was deemed unfit to start by Poland’s coach, Michal Probierz. Despite this, he played, receiving a yellow card for a foul.
The match occurred in a vibrant atmosphere at the Olympiastadion, with fans from both nations filling the stands. Austria’s supporters, in particular, celebrated energetically after their team’s dominant start.
Poland improved as the game progressed, with Nicola Zalewski missing a prime chance. However, Austria’s defence held strong, denying further Polish attempts.
The match was lively, contrasting the teams’ previous encounters, which were low-scoring. Austria now looks forward to their next game, potentially securing a place in the last 16, a feat they last achieved at Euro 2020.
