In 2021, Australian intelligence officials discovered a group of spies attempting to steal defence secrets and monitor expatriates and operatives who were subsequently expelled from Australia. However, officials initially did not disclose their country of origin.
Recently, local media, including ABC, reported that these spies were sent from India. This claim poses a diplomatic challenge for Australia, which is strengthening its security ties with India. Australia, along with the United States and Japan, is part of the Quad security partnership, enhancing the geopolitical sensitivity of the situation.
On Wednesday, several high-ranking Australian ministers, including the Prime Minister, dodged questions regarding the alleged Indian spy ring. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, emphasizing the confidentiality of intelligence matters, declined to comment following the ABC report, which cited anonymous national security and government sources.
During a previous visit to Australia, Albanese had fostered a strong rapport with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, openly praising him at a large gathering of Indian-Australians. Despite concerns over India’s domestic affairs under Modi’s administration, Australia has prioritized developing trade and defence relations over critiquing India’s affairs.
This incident mirrors strained relations between India and Canada after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau associated Indian intelligence with the assassination of a Canadian citizen, a claim India dismissed as “absurd.”
“Australia” Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Treasurer Jim Chalmers also refrained from discussing the spy allegations, underscoring Australia’s democratic principles and resilience against foreign interference with existing laws to address such issues.
Previously, Mike Burgess, a top Australian intelligence official, had accused these spies of attempting to infiltrate Australian politics and secure sensitive information about the country’s security, including airport security protocols, without specifying their nationalities.
The Indian High Commission has not commented on these allegations.
