Asma Jahangir laid to rest

Prominent lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jahangir was laid to rest at a farmhouse on Bedian road here on Tuesday.

Earlier, her funeral prayer led by Farooq Haider Maududi was held here at Qaddafi Stadium. A large number of people from different walks of life including prominent members of the legal fraternity along with her family members attended the funeral prayer.

Prominent of them were Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani, Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf, Lahore High Court Chief Justice

Muhammad Yawar Ali, Justice Anwaarul Haq, Justice Faisal Zaman Khan, Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry, Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri and others.

It is pertinent to mention here that late Asma Jahangir passed away on Sunday at the age of 66. Born in 1952, studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary before receiving her B.A degree from Kinnaird College and LLB from the Punjab University in 1978.

She served as president of Supreme Court Bar Association. She was also active in the 2007 Lawyers’ Movement, for which

she was put under house arrest.

She co-founded the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, and the Women’s Action Forum.

Late Asma Jahangir defended cases of minorities, women and children in prisons.

She was recipient of several national awards, including Sitara-I-Imtiaz in 1995. (APP)
