Arshad Nadeem: Triumph Over Injury and Eyes on the Olympics

The path of a champion is fraught with trials, and for Commonwealth Games gold medalist javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem, this has been no different. After a debilitating knee injury in 2021, Arshad is not just back on his feet but is firmly setting his sights on the upcoming World Athletics Championship.

Training rigorously at the Punjab Stadium in Lahore, the air is thick with Arshad’s determination. As the world event looms close, slated for August 25 to 27 in Hungary, he confidently declares his return to form. “The knee injury is a thing of the past. Though I had to step back from the Asian championship due to it, my training is now in full swing. My sights are set on clinching medals in the forthcoming championships,” Arshad remarked enthusiastically.

Nadeem’s Upcoming Events and Goals

But the World Athletics Championship is just a fragment of Arshad’s vision. A bigger spectacle awaits as he is also geared up to participate in the Asian Games commencing on September 23 in Hangzhou, China.

Yet, beyond these competitions, the horizon he eagerly gazes at is the 2024 Paris Olympics. “The Olympics next year is my primary target. I am earnestly preparing for it. While the government has extended facilities to me, there’s still a gap compared to international standards,” Arshad pointed out.

He compared the disparity in training facilities, referencing his Indian counterpart, Neeraj Chopra. “Neeraj receives more advanced facilities than I do. That’s the discernible difference in our training environments,” he stated.

Remembering the Injury

Looking back at the unfortunate incident where Arshad’s journey faced a significant setback is crucial. During the 34th National Games, he suffered a knee injury, a grim reminder of the risks athletes often face. Akram Sahi, the chief of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan, elaborated on the issue. Arshad had injured his right knee after undergoing surgery on his left knee the previous year.

Sahi also expressed discontent towards WAPDA, accusing them of pressuring Arshad to compete in the National Games. Despite the challenges, Arshad’s gold medal win at the event exemplified his undying spirit.
