Speculation around Apple’s first foldable iPhone continues to build, but new reports suggest the company is already exploring ideas for a second-generation device, even before the initial model reaches the market.
According to Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, Apple is considering a clamshell-style foldable iPhone with a compact, square-shaped design. Gurman emphasized that while the concept is under evaluation, it is “far from guaranteed” to become a commercial product.
If Apple moves forward with a clamshell foldable, it would mark a clear strategic push into a competitive segment currently dominated by devices such as Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Motorola’s Razr lineup. Such a move would signal Apple’s confidence in its hardware engineering and long-term foldable strategy.

Gurman also reported that Apple expects strong consumer interest in its first foldable iPhone. Multiple industry leaks point to a potential launch window in late 2026, as the company positions itself to enter the foldable market once demand and technology mature further.
This is not the first time a clamshell design has surfaced in Apple-related reports. Earlier coverage by The Information revealed that Apple has tested internal prototypes with a similar form factor. Gurman added that a larger, book-style foldable iPhone also remains part of Apple’s long-term product roadmap.

Previously, Apple reportedly explored a foldable device closer in size to an iPad. However, significant engineering challenges have delayed progress, with expectations now pointing to a possible release around 2029 for a larger foldable device.
