Apple’s long-anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market appears closer than ever. According to a new report from Fubon Research, the company could launch its first foldable iPhone as early as 2026 possibly under the name iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra.
The upcoming device is expected to be Apple’s most expensive model yet, with a projected retail price of $2,399, significantly higher than any current iPhone.
Fubon Research analyst Arthur Liao forecasted that Apple’s foldable will cost more than previously expected. Earlier rumours suggested a range of $2,000 to $2,500, but Fubon’s supply chain analysis points to $2,399, driven by higher component costs and Apple’s strong profit margins.
Liao also noted that the Bill of Materials (BOM) could rise by 5–6% in 2026 due to the complex folding display technology. While the higher cost may limit demand, analysts remain optimistic that Apple’s brand strength and innovation could make the foldable iPhone a category leader.
Fubon further revealed that Apple plans major camera upgrades for 2026. The upcoming iPhone 18 series will likely feature a variable aperture lens, exclusively supplied by Largan Precision, given the complexity of the optics.

Industry experts believe Apple’s timing reflects the maturing foldable smartphone market. Samsung’s Drew Blackard recently highlighted that foldables have reached a level of refinement and durability that appeals to mainstream users. Reports suggest Apple’s design will feature a crease-free display and seamless hinge technology potentially setting a new industry benchmark.
In comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 starts at $1,999, and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold begins at $1,799, both of which are often available at discounted prices. Apple’s entry would place it firmly at the top of the market in both pricing and perceived value.

Despite enthusiasm for innovation, analysts expect a tough global smartphone market ahead. Liao’s report forecasts worldwide smartphone shipments to fall 4% year-on-year in 2026 to 1.2 billion units, while China’s shipments may drop 3% to 275 million units.
Apple’s own iPhone shipments could decline 4% to 234 million units, though the company still expects strong sales for its foldable models. Fubon estimates cumulative lifetime sales of around 15.4 million foldable iPhones, with 5.4 million units sold in 2026 alone.
If Apple adopts the “iPhone Ultra” name, it would reinforce its position as the pinnacle of premium smartphone design, bridging innovation, luxury, and exclusivity
