Apple is reportedly developing a foldable iPhone, poised to compete with similar offerings from tech giants like Samsung, Oppo, and Huawei. Although Apple has not officially announced the launch of a foldable smartphone, multiple sources, including patents and leaks, suggest the company is exploring this innovative technology.
According to a recent leak on Weibo by the tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone might adopt a book-style design similar to the Oppo Find N series but with a notably shorter and thicker build. The leak reveals that the device could feature a 5.49-inch cover display, identical in size to the outer screen of Oppo’s first-generation Find N.
Inside, the foldable iPhone is expected to boast a 7.74-inch main screen, providing a tablet-like experience when unfolded. This larger internal display is said to unfold like an iPad, which is ideal for enhanced content viewing. The device is also rumoured to feature an “unprecedented screen ratio”, which could indicate a unique aspect ratio different from current market offerings.
Potential Market Position and Competition
Digital Chat Station suggests that Apple’s foldable device could merge smartphone and tablet functionalities, directly competing with established foldable lines such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Oppo’s Find N series. This move would mark Apple’s entry into the rapidly evolving foldable device sector, expanding its ecosystem with versatile, dual-purpose devices.
Further fueling the speculation, another tipster hinted earlier this month that Apple might launch its first foldable phone next year, with plans for a foldable iPad and MacBook slated for release in 2027. Additionally, a recent report highlighted Apple’s acquisition of an ultra-thin glass supplier for the foldable device, suggesting progress in its development.
In contrast, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported that Apple is working on a foldable that mimics an iPad’s functionality without a visible crease, potentially launching by 2028.
