Apple is creating a new tool for developers called AppMigrationKit. This framework will make it simpler to move app data between Android devices and iPhones.
The tool is designed for devices running iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 27.1 or later. It is currently in beta testing. AppMigrationKit has a very specific purpose. It is not for transferring data between Apple devices.
According to Apple’s official documentation, the framework “only supports migration to and from non-Apple platforms, such as Android.” This means it is built exclusively for moving data between rival operating systems.
For developers, the process involves creating a small app extension. This tells the system whether the app can import, export, or both.

When a user switches to a new phone, all apps that use AppMigrationKit will have their data included in the transfer package. After the move is complete, developers can also help import any cloud-stored data to the new device.
This new framework supports a feature first reported in May called “Transfer to Android.” This will be a one-time process accessible through the iPhone’s Settings.

It will guide users through what data can and cannot be moved to an Android device. Since the feature is being developed as a two-way street, a similar “Transfer to iPhone” tool is also expected for Android devices.
Apple notes that the framework is still in beta and could change. Developers who want to prepare their apps should review the preliminary documentation on Apple’s Developer website. While Apple has not confirmed a final release date for AppMigrationKit, the available documentation suggests it will be launched soon.
