Anna Possi, a 101-year-old Italian woman, still serves espresso daily at Bar Centrale in Nebbiuno. She has been the heart of this lakeside café since it first opened its doors with her husband in 1958.
The centenarian recently celebrated her birthday with no plans to retire. She continues to greet locals and tourists with the same precision and warmth that has defined her life’s work.
Possi’s career spans extraordinary social change. She initially ran the cafe with her husband without any staff. After her husband passed away in 1974, she continued alone. For the past 51 years, she has single-handedly managed the bar as a widow.
She has witnessed the complete evolution of Italian coffee culture. Her bar first served paper mill workers stopping for a morning coffee. Later, it added a dance floor and became a regional hotspot. Lawyers and doctors frequented the bar for its lake views and vibrant atmosphere.

For Possi, Bar Centrale is far more than a business. “I like it because I like to be surrounded by people,” she told Reuters. She describes the bar as a family and a community meeting place. People visit not just to consume, but to connect with one another.
She often helps patrons with paperwork and errands. She also showcases local artwork for free, donating any proceeds to charity.
Possi credits her long life to her active work ethic. “Work is what distracts you and at the same time gives you something — it makes you feel independent,” she explained. Her advice to younger generations is clear. She urges them to work, save money, and remain self-reliant.
"J’ai commencé à travailler ici à 18 ans, et j’ai toujours fait ce métier."
