Chinese technology powerhouse Alibaba has launched the Qwen 2.5-Max AI model to coincide with the Lunar New Year, aiming to counter the swift rise of AI startup DeepSeek.
Alibaba’s cloud unit announced the release of Qwen 2.5-Max, asserting that it surpasses major competitors, including GPT-4o, DeepSeek-V3, and Llama-3.1-405B. This statement, shared on Alibaba’s WeChat, highlights the model’s capabilities in eclipsing some of the most sophisticated AI models from global leaders like OpenAI and Meta.
The emergence of DeepSeek, with its cost-effective AI models, has shaken Silicon Valley and ignited fierce competition among China’s domestic AI developers. The success of DeepSeek’s R1 and V3 models, renowned for their low operational costs, has prompted Alibaba and others to accelerate enhancements to their technologies.
Following DeepSeek’s advancements, other major Chinese tech firms have also updated their AI offerings. ByteDance, for instance, claimed its latest model outperformed OpenAI’s o1 in crucial benchmark tests. This rapid sequence of innovations reflects a broader trend of aggressive development and pricing strategies within China’s AI landscape, sparked initially by DeepSeek’s disruptive pricing.
The release of DeepSeek-V2 last year initiated a price war in the AI sector, leading Alibaba to slash prices dramatically. This strategy has influenced other tech giants in the region to reevaluate and adjust their pricing models to stay competitive.
