Aimal Wali Khan was elected president of the Awami National Party (ANP) during a general council meeting held at the ANP’s Bacha Khan Centre in Peshawar. Chief Election Commissioner Iftikhar Hussain presided over the meeting.
According to sources, Aimal Wali Khan was the only nominee for the presidency, with his candidacy proposed by ANP leader Haider Khan Hoti. Aimal succeeds his father, Asfandyar Wali Khan, who has stepped back from active politics and did not participate in the general elections on February 8.
Earlier Saturday, ANP’s central spokesperson, Zahid Khan, resigned and announced that he would not engage in the party’s intra-election activities. Sources suggest that Hoti and Zahid Khan abstained from the elections due to internal political differences.
Zahid Khan, reportedly at odds with the party’s leadership, had become estranged from party affairs. Animal attempted to reconcile with Zahid, including a personal visit, but was unsuccessful.
