A suicide bombing in a Shia mosque in northern Afghanistan resulted in the tragic death of seven people, with 15 others injured, as confirmed by the current Taliban government. The unfortunate incident occurred during Friday prayers at the Imam Zaman mosque in Pol-i-Khomri, Baghlan province’s capital. Although the rate of such violent episodes has diminished since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, other extremist factions, notably the regional Islamic State organization, remain a significant threat. While an official statement from the provincial information head, Mustafa Asadullah Hashimi, acknowledged the tragedy, an anonymous source at Baghlan Provincial Hospital cited an even higher casualty count.
Tensions Amidst Taliban Rule
The local chapter of the IS has a history of targeting Shia communities, whom they regard as sinful. Both the Taliban and IS endorse a strict Sunni doctrine, yet the Taliban has vowed to safeguard all ethnic and religious groups in Afghanistan. The IS group’s ambitions extend beyond Afghanistan’s borders, aiming to establish a global Islamic empire. Their hostility is evident in their acts since the Taliban’s return to power, with attacks on various important sites in Kabul, including assassinating two provincial governors. Their involvement in the bombing of a study hall in 2022, which resulted in 53 deaths, is a testament to their ongoing threat. As per a UN Security Council report, the group has been responsible for over 190 suicide bombings since 2022, causing around 1,300 casualties.
